The History of River Falls Golf Club
River Falls Wisconsin joined the ranks
of the leisure golfers in 1929. As an early history notes: "In 1929,
many things happened. The stock market crashed, Herbert Hoover was
elected president, the New York Yankees won the World Series again,
and construction of the River Falls Golf Course began."
The Articles of Association were filed with the Department of State on
April 16, 1929, indicating that it preceded all the other events
mentioned. The course was formed by a group of local men who were
playing golf at other courses and decided that it was time to build
their own. They bought 46 acres of land on the bluff on the northeast
side of the city, paying $4,000. And so, the 9 hole, 3,000 yard public
course became reality.
The original clubhouse was a small building with no running water,
located on the north side of the property. The course was then, and is
now, reached by a winding road rising from County Road MM. The road
has been relocated since 1929, but you still would have no idea the
course was there if the sign at the bottom of the hill didn't tell
you.
In 1955, after much discussion, grass greens became a reality and in
1960 the membership appointed a committee to look into the feasibility
of building a new clubhouse. By 1962 there was a new clubhouse and by
1970 a kitchen and dining room had been added. There were storage and
locker rooms on the lower level, an office area, a pro shop, bar room,
and eating space on the main floor. An additional dining room was
added in 1990.
Discussion during the early 60's also included adding holes to the
course and by the end of the decade, nine new holes existed. There
were some changes in the existing holes as well. The layout as it is
today has changed very little from the design in the 60's. A
combination of designers from 1929 to the present has combined to
establish a very fine club, which offers a wide variety of challenges
and spectacular vistas.
